The Art of Truth
Crafting words that take readers on a journey.
Seeing and Experiencing the World at 10 Knots or Less, Finding the Little Nuggets of Goodness Hidden in the Steep Climbs and the Remote Anchorages.
I like to experience the world at human speed.
A fast walking clip is maybe five miles an hour. I average about ten MPH when I tour long distance on my bicycle. On a nice fifteen knot beam reach, Harvest Moon sings along at seven and eight knots.
That’s human speed. That’s how fast I want to move through life. Any faster and it’s not really life I’m experiencing, but somebody else’s summary. I want the whole thing, experienced for myself.
That’s why I live on a sailboat, and walk a lot, and ride my bike. I like to share my experiences in words and images, often in the form of posts here on this site, sometimes as articles in periodicals, and sometimes in books about particular adventures. I particularly love it when my writing connects with readers, and they feel part of the adventure.
The Flint Hills of Kansas are my spiritual home. The wide rolling landscape of the deep tallgrass prairie taught me to cultivate a broad perspective while searching for subtleties hidden in low pockets sheltered from the winds of what feels obvious.
I graduated from Kansas State University, where I studied Architecture and Psychology. A short stint with an engineering firm taught me that sitting in one place and doing one thing probably wasn’t going to work for me, so I began a meandering career path to which I’ve remained true, working as a cook, carpenter, truck driver, concrete finisher, salesman, operations manager, computer programmer, software architect, and project manager. My executive experience includes several years in c-level positions.
My newest adventure palette is the sea. My wife Christine and I live aboard Harvest Moon, our Island Packet 380 sailboat, adventuring up and down the Atlantic off the eastern shore of North America from Nova Scotia to the tropics, looking forward to a long range ocean crossing to Scandinavia in the future.
